The Trials and Tribulations of a Novice Airplane Kit Builder
10/3-6/2008 - 8 HoursBack at it again. Approximately 3 weeks ago we had a sump pump failure which flooded our basement. Our storage room was then transferred to the garage stopping progress on the plane. Everything has been moved back and work has begun yet again. Finished most bulkheads except F711 which is about 90% complete. Here are the pics:F706: F707 and 708: F709/10/11/12: 10/7-25/2008 - 10 HoursIt's been slow going as there are a number of things going on here at home. The standard running kids around, Jo has been traveling, finishing off the basement etc etc. Just life stuff. I have managed to get a few things done such as the longerons. Thank the good lord that is over. Put them into a vice, clamp it down, bang with hammer, unclamp and move 1 inch and repeat process. After each blow to make a bend, the aluminum angle bends in twists or bends in another dimension so at some point you have to correct that. What a pain in the chops! Here are the pics:Started with setting up the template from one of the drawings, cut it out and taped it to some styrofoam for rigidity:Next up is cutting the AA to the proper length. To remove the slop in the end of the tape measure, I taped it to the AA beginning at the 1" mark and added 1" to the other end for my cut mark. Made the marks where the bends will go.. every 1". Next up is the bending and checking, bending and checking and bend... well you get it. Also, put in the sharp downward bend and the necessary twist per plans. Placed F721 proprely, drilled, deburred and then cut the slot per detail in the plans: Cut the notch at the rear of the longs: Started working on J Channels. Cut them to length. No pics. 10/26-31/2008 - 4 HoursCut the notches in the J channels: Did all the necessary work for the tail cone and tail wheel mount:Fitting everything was a pain the chops! Cut the tail cone to allow the tailwheel weldment to fit and drilled everything in place:
