The Trials and Tribulations of a Novice Airplane Kit Builder
12/1/2007 - 4 HoursSealed/Riveted the right side stiffies. Used a 30mL syringe this time to see if it would be any better. It was quite the pain getting the sealant into the syringe but once this was done then application to the skin was easy especially going back and putting a dab on each shop head. Before: After: 12/5/2007 - 2.5 HoursSealed/Riveted both fuel drains and fuel filler caps. I also put a rivet into the right/left outboard rib tooling hole. I will seal them when I start the ribs. 12/8/2005 - 2 HoursSealed/Riveted the 1st of 14 ribs. It took 2 hours. Lots of fun ahead. This session wasn't too bad... not too messy and only screwed up two rivets. 12/11/2005 - 2 HoursSealed/Riveted the 2nd of 14 ribs. Needed help this time. Had Mitch come out and run the rivet gun. This worked out well. He did a great job and we didn't have to drill out any! It took about 45 minutes to get all the rivets in. I let him go after this and I finished off the filleting and dabbing the shop heads. Looks sort of messy but I am quite certain it won't leak. No pics. 12/14/2007 - 3 HoursHad the afternoon off work so I decided to get a couple of ribs done. Did 2 more. This was a tad more efficient than doing just one. Saved myself approx 1 hour. No pics12/16/2007 - 2 HoursDid two more ribs. One of them being the inboard rib. Thought this would go quicker since I got to use the squeezer but riveting on the attach angle on the forward part of the rib took some time.12/18/2007 - 2 HoursFinished up the ribs on the right tank by sealing the outboard rib to the tank skin. Nothing major here except that I hadn't realized that the outboard rib gets a reinforcement plate on the forward side. I had to drill out the forward AN470 4-6 rivet in the tooling hole then drill 3 holes on the plate and match drill to the rib. Then debur etc and finally seal everything up. 12/26/2007 - .75 HoursGot the left tank setup in the cradle. Removed the rivet from the forward tooling hole on the outboard rib and fitted the reinforcement plate to the rib. Next, cleco'd all ribs to the tank skin in preparation for sealing. 12/28/2007 - 2.5 HoursStarted riveting the left side ribs. Completed two of them.12/29/2007 - 3.5 HoursDid 3 ribs today. Only planned on doing 2 but I had enough sealant left over to goop up another so I went for it. Had to mix a little more to finish the job. 2 ribs left to go ... jeez I can't wait til this sealant crud is over!!
